The Nauruan government says while it would be happy to help Australia deal with asylum seekers, its economy does not need the Pacific solution to be revived.

In 2001 the former coalition government paid Nauru to house asylum seekers trying to reach Australia.

The Pacific solution provided over 100 jobs on Nauru and a significant boost to the local economy.

Tony Abbott spent Sunday on the island reaffirming his commitment to reopen the immigration detention camps if the coalition wins the next election.

Nauru's Foreign Minister, Kieran Keke, says his government would be happy to work with Australia on the issue again, but its economy has grown a lot in the past decade and it is not relying on the camps being opened.

Mr Abbott was to meet other senior politicians on Monday.
