Clashes have broken out between supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and anti-government protesters in several Syrian cities.

Syrian state television has shown pictures of massive rallies in support of the President, celebrating Tuesday's speech, where he promised to reform the country's authoritarian laws and open up the media and political system.

But they didn't show the clashes that have been also been reported as taking place, by demonstrators who don't believe Bashar al-Assad's promises, and who are calling for him to go.

At least seven people have been reportedly killed in the latest clashes.

Witnesses say security forces fired on protesters but with foreign journalists still barred from entering Syria, the reports are impossible to verify.
