An emperor penguin has taken a wrong turn from the Antarctic and ended up on a beach in New Zealand.

It is believed to be the first sighting in the wild in New Zealand for more than 40 years.

The penguin, which is thought to be about 10 months old, was spotted on Monday by a woman out walking her dog at Peka Peka beach on the North Island's western coast.

New Zealand conservationists say the penguin appears healthy but it will soon need to find its way back south if it's to survive.

Local residents gazed in awe.

"I just want to rescue it, poor little thing," one onlooker said.
