An Australian government lawyer expelled from Vanuatu says claims that he is a spy are 'ridiculous'.

The Australian newspaper says 40-year-old Ari Jenshel was thrown out over his activities as senior adviser in the office of the Attorney-General, in Port Vila.

It is believed the Australian Government was told about Mr Jenshel's expulsion, after his office was raided and files and a computer confiscated.

A former defence force lawyer, Mr Jenshel went to Vanuatu in 2006 as part of an AusAID program.

Vanuatu police say they are investigating sensitive documents, some relating to Fiji, that were copied and sent to the Australian Government in Canberra.
