Cambodia's war crimes court has rejected a request to release former Khmer Rouge leader Ieng Sary from prison.

Sary, Cambodia's foreign minister during the "Killing Fields" era, is in custody awaiting a trail for genocide.

Judges says detention is necessary to prevent him from fleeing.

Ieng Sary, 85, faces charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, relating to the deaths of 2 million people in executions and from overwork and starvation between 1975 and 1979.

Cambodia's genocide trials began in 2009, more than 30 years after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime.
