A funeral has been held on Friday in the Western Australian city of Perth for World War I veteran Claude Choules.

Mr Choules was the world's last known veteran who saw active service in both world wars.

He served in the British navy in World War I and later moved to Australia where he joined the Royal Australian Navy and served in World War II.

Mr Choules died in a Perth nursing home on May 5 aged 110.

A public naval service was held in Fremantle, where Mr Choules was farewelled by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as well as dignatories and more than 100 navy personnel.

His daughter Anne Pow says she has been overwhelmed by the support from friends, the Navy and the community.

"I've had some very lovely cards from people I haven't seen for many years but also from people I've never known," she said.

"So people are touched by his story and our story too and we appreciate their interest."

During the service he was remembered as a family man who had lived a full life.

"There's a lot of celebration in it because he had such a wonderful life and he was such an important member of the family, a patriarch you might say of our family," she said.

"But you can't keep people forever. He did get to 110."

At the completion of the service Mr choules' coffin was carried in a short procession by navy pallbearers.
