Almost 30,000 pupils have received their exam results a day early by mistake, the Scottish Qualifications Authority has confirmed.
The exams body said the results sent out by text message were correct.
A spokesman said they were making urgent inquiries of the external contractor which sends out texts on behalf of the SQA.
Nearly 160,000 students were expecting results of Highers and Standard Grades on Thursday.
Almost 36,000 pupils signed up to get their exam results electronically, by text or email. Those who opted for text only notification have been receiving results.
A group of 16 pupils from schools in Renfrewshire and Inverclyde who are on holiday abroad were among the thousands who starting getting texts in the past few hours.
The text and email results were due to be sent out between 08:00 and 09:00 on Thursday.
A spokesman for the SQA said: "It seems that all 29,863 - out of 159,744 - candidates who had opted for text delivery have received their results early.
"No candidate will have been advantaged or disadvantaged as a result of the early delivery.
"Nevertheless, during what is in any case a stressful time for candidates and their families SQA apologises for any additional stress caused."
