Workmen at the scene near South Croydon station Mud and debris cascaded down the embankment near South Croydon station
Rail passengers from London to Gatwick Airport are being told to allow extra time after flooding in south London.
Travellers faced severe disruption on Monday after a water main burst near South Croydon station, flooding tracks.
Some rail services have resumed on Tuesday morning, including a reduced half-hourly Gatwick Express service.
South Croydon and Purley Oaks stations will be closed all day and there are timetable changes to many routes between London and the South Coast.
As well as the Gatwick Express, which was suspended on Monday, trains operated by Southern and First Capital Connect have also been hit by a reduced timetable.
Travellers have been told they can check details of the changes at National Rail Enquiries.
'Debris on track' Apologising for the disruption, Thames Water said on Monday the main had been shut off at about midday and engineers were working to fix the problem.
A spokesperson for the firm said it was working with Network Rail to provide any assistance it could.
The burst main, in Stanhope Road, was reported at about 09:40 BST on Monday. No water supplies have been affected.
A Network Rail spokesman said there was a significant amount of water on the track.
He said: "The water cascaded down an embankment and debris, including earth, has also got on to the track."
Engineers have been working through the night to stabilise the embankment.
Two of the five railway lines between East Croydon and South Croydon stations reopened just after 18:00 BST.
