Australia's political opposition says the Federal Government must resume live cattle exports to Indonesia within a few weeks. The government says it will not restart the trade until it can guarantee cattle will not be mistreated after revelations of animal cruelty.
Ministers from the ruling Labor Party are expected to debate a motion calling for the ban to stay until all abattoirs receiving Australian cattle meet Australian standards.
But the opposition's agriculture spokesman John Cobb says several abattoirs in Indonesia do meet appropriate standards.
"The biggest issue is not allowing this situation to go on, so that northern Australia does not suddenly have to find a home for 400 or 500 thousand cattle which become too old to go to Indonesia."
