Airline passengers could be stranded for several days as ash from the volcano in Chile continues to hover over south-eastern Australia.

With tens of thousands of passengers affected so far, the Qantas, Jetstar and Tiger airlineas have stopped flying to Adelaide, South Australia.

Qantas and Jetstar have also cancelled flights to Tasmania and New Zealand, while Tiger is not flying to Perth.

Virgin Airlines is flying all services, with planes operating under or around the ash.

The head of the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, Dr Andrew Tupper, says the ash cloud will continue to move around Australia.

"I think we're still talking a few days before it disperses completely," Dr Tupper said.

"There's still ash trail in the west that we're watching quite closely, we expect that to move to the south but it all bears close watching at the moment."
